Building Access
Access cards are available by written request using the
Access Card Request form
The lobby doors are open from 7am to 6pm weekdays.
Security starts with you: If you don’t recognize someone who is accompanying
you through the door or up the elevator, please feel free to introduce
yourself and ask to see their ID.
Lost Access Cards / Keys
There is a $20 deposit for each replacement access card or key. If you have
lost your access card and/or keys, please complete an
Replacement Access card form or
Replacement Key Request Form. Come to Room 122
with your deposit in the form of a check or money order (no cash or
credit/debit cards). You will be given a receipt for your deposit. Take the
Access Card Request Form or Key Request Form and the receipt to Room B52 to
obtain your access card or key.
Identification Badges
All employees at 815 Mercer are expected to follow the ID
badge regulations as at Health Sciences and Harborview. Everyone in the
building wears a photo ID badge at the following times:
- After hours, i.e., weekdays before 7am and after 6pm
and all day on weekends and holidays.
- At all times in animal quarters or laboratories where
animals are present.
- At all times in high security laboratories where
sensitive research, hazardous chemicals, radioactive materials or select
agents are present.
Photo IDs are obtained in Health Sciences. Refer to
http://depts.washington.edu/hsasf/building/id_request.html for
location, hours of operation and forms. Department should be designated as
“UW Medicine at SLU” or the specific department. Do not use the photo ID form
to request an access card for 815 Mercer.
Security Monitoring
815 Mercer is monitored by a security firm during
non-business hours. It is not served by UW Police. Use Infocentre to contact
the security firm. (800) 861-0245.
Fire or Police Emergencies
815 Mercer is not served by UW Police. For fire or police emergencies,
dial 9-911.
Emergency Procedures
Refer to the Emergency Procedure manual located in your
lab for exit locations and other important procedures. When a fire alarm
sounds, please make sure to exit the building immediately. Do not call anyone
to confirm validity of alarm. All labs should have a point person that will
notify you once the building is safe to re-enter. Periodic fire drills and
earthquake drills are provided to practice these procedures in the event of
an actual emergency. Please take the opportunity to benefit from these
events.
First Aid
First aid kits are located on the tops of refrigerators
in the kitchen areas. Please see your Lab Manager for location of other first
aid supplies. It is the responsibility of each lab to notify SLU
Administration when supplies are needed for these kits.
Visitors and Guests
Visitors and guests should check in with the receptionist
on the first floor to contact their host and receive a guest pass.
Regeneration Station
The Regeneration Station is located on the first floor
near the south entrance. It is managed by UW Housing and Food Services.
Hours of operation: 8am to 3pm weekdays.
Vending Machines
Vending machines are located on the first floor adjacent
to the Regeneration Station. Please see the Site Manager for questions or
concerns about the machines or contact Michael Meyering at Housing and Food
Services, (206) 685-8221 or
meyering@u.washington.edu.
Kitchen Areas
All employees share the kitchen areas on all four
floors. Refrigerators are a shared resource. The refrigerators should be
cleaned out periodically by a member of your lab groups.
Computers and Printers
Computers and printers are the responsibility of the
individual investigators and departments. The IT infrastructure and SLU
Domain are provided by Pathology Computer Support. Contact
http://www.pathology.washington.edu/tech/ to file a tech request. Desktop
support is available on an annual basis or per event as determined by each
investigator or department.
Copiers
Central copiers are located on the 2nd and 4th
floors near the kitchens. For problems with the copiers or copy codes, contact
Jon Paras at the front desk or by calling 897-1327 or emailing
parasj@u.washington.edu. Copy paper for the copy machines is purchased
centrally and should not be used for lab or desktop printers or fax machines.
Fax Machines
Central fax machines are located at the front desk and
floors 3 and 4. Questions or problems about these machines should be reported
to Jon Paras at 897-1327 or parasj@u.washington.edu.
Research Equipment Repair
Repair of certain laboratory equipment can be arranged with UW Scientific
Instruments Department at 543-5580.
Shared Equipment
Select research equipment is shared with all researchers in the building. Repairs and maintenance for these instruments should be
arranged with SLU Administration.
Freezer Alarm System
There is a building-wide freezer alarm system available for freezers with
internal alarm systems. For more information, contact Mike Robertson, Site
Manager,
mrob@u.washington.edu. To add or remove a freezer from the system, submit
a request on InfoCentre.
Dry Ice
Dry ice is available in Room B56. Please be prepared to provide a budget
number and PI name. Dry ice is billed monthly via Cost Transfer Invoice.
Autoclaving and Dishwashing
Autoclave and dishwashing services are provided by the Cell and Tissue
Culture Cost Center located in Room B56. Contact Tony Saulewicz at

Flow Cytometry
Cell analysis and cell sorting are available in the Scientific Equipment
Recharge Center located in Room 119. Contact Fred Lewis at

Confocal Microscopy
Confocal microscope services are available in the Scientific Equipment
Recharge Center. Contact Ron Seifert at

Conference Room and Auditorium Scheduling
Reservations for building conference rooms and the Blue Flame auditorium

Lockers
Lockers are available in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th
floor restrooms on a first come, first served basis. Questions or problems

Showers
Showers are located in the 2nd floor restrooms.

Long Distance
Long distance access should be requested through your supervisor or budget
manager.
Waste Disposal
All labs are responsible for disposing all foam packing and cardboard
boxes. Receptacles for foam peanuts are available on all floors. Cardboard
boxes should be broken down and placed next to recycle bins and/or garbage
containers. Garbage containers and Recycle bins are available by placing a
request on Infocentre. Battery recycling is available in the mailroom in the
basement. Hazardous waste disposal is scheduled through EH&S. Contact Matt
Moeller, maddmatt@u.washington.edu at EHS for arrangements.
The custodial staff is responsible for disposing of trash
and recycling receptacles in offices and labs. Items inadvertently placed in
or on trash containers or recycling receptacles will be assumed to be for
disposal.
Loading Dock
For delivery issues, please call the Loading Dock Coordinator, at
897-1547. The Loading Dock Coordinator will ensure that packages and
deliveries are properly received at the loading dock and then make
arrangements for internal delivery within the building.
Mail
The Loading Dock Coordinator picks up campus and US mail at 9:30am from
the collections boxes located in each lab. All incoming mail is distributed
to the departmental boxes throughout the building.
- To assure proper delivery of mail and packages, all
mail must include a contact name and lab group.
- Campus mail pick up and delivery is at 11am.
- US mail will be delivered around 10am.
- Package Deliveries via UPS, FedEx, and DHL must
be addressed using Lab name, Room #, Attention to and the street address:
815 Mercer St, Seattle, WA 98109-4325.
- Outgoing packages via UPS, FedEx and DHL must be
at the designated pick-up area of the loading dock by 2:30pm daily.
Courier to A-300 Health Sciences
West courier has a posted schedule at the outgoing mailbox in the loading
dock for mail between 815 mercer and campus Box 357242 (A300). This is for
urgent business only – please arrange for pick up at A300.
Facility Management
McKinstry Essention is the building facility management firm hired by the
School of Medicine to maintain all building functions and support approved
renovations. Their primary work request tool is called InfoCentre. Access to
Infocentre is on a need basis. Contact Mike Robertson, Site Manager, or
Building Administrator(TBA), for access. Requests can also be submitted to Jon Paras at 897-1327 or
parasj@u.washington.edu.
Renovations and Tenant Improvements
Minor renovations to lab casework, installation of cabinetry and equipment
is managed by McKinstry Essention. Requests should be submitted through
Infocentre. When budget approval is required, it will be obtained in writing
through Mike Robertson, Site Manager,

Repairs
Concerns or repair requests regarding installed building systems including
but not limited to light, HVAC, plumbing, windows, etc. should go to McKinstry
Essention via InfoCentre.
Cleaning

Transportation
A transportation information board is located on the first floor of 815
Mercer St. Additional transportation questions can be answered by
contacting your Lake Union Employee Transportation Coordinator, Miranda

Bicycles
Bike lockers are located on in the parking lot on 8th Avenue on
a first come, first served basis. Please see Mike Robertson,
mrob@u.washington.edu, Site Manager, for keys to lockers. Bike racks are
located in the parking lot to the south of the building.
For issues related to bicycling safety in and to and from
the South Lake Union area, contact Cascade Bicycle Club,

Parking
Single Occupancy Vehicle Parking permits are available through Parking
Services. SLU Parking Permits allow Out-of- Area parking in all on-campus
lots except Triangle. Approval of the Dean’s Office is required prior to
obtaining a parking pass for SLU. See Building Administrator(TBA), for
approval. All other UW parking permits, including daily commuter tickets and Harborview parking permits are accepted at the SLU parking area. Guests are
encouraged to use street parking and area parking lots. Information on SlU

Carpool Parking
Carpool parking is available at the same rates as charged on campus. All
individuals in the carpool must be approved for parking at South Lake Union to
participate in this program and follow the guidelines set by Parking Services.
Motorcycle Parking
Motorcycles are allowed to park at no cost in designated areas of 815
Mercer and behind the Rosen Building. Please contact Mike Robertson, Site

South Lake Union Shuttle
The School of Medicine provides a shuttle service between 815 Mercer and
Health Sciences. Schedules and stop locations are posted on the
transportation board on the first floor or visit
